Bio

Dr. Chen is an Assistant Professor in the UW School of Medicine. He completed medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, residency training at UW, and a general internal medicine fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, including a Masters in Health Economics and a leadership program in patient safety and quality improvement. He also completed the Leadership in Health Policy program through the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM).

Dr. Chen is a general internist, practicing primary care and HIV medicine at the Seattle VA. He serves as the Director of Population Health for Primary Care across the VA Puget Sound Health Care System. Additionally, he leads the UW Internal Medicine Residency program’s Health Systems Pathway and Curriculum and serves as the Chair of SGIM’s national Health Policy Clinical Practice Committee.

Dr. Chen believes in approaching systems change from all levels, with current focus at the macro/policy level at the intersection of primary care payment models and equity, and at the clinical microsystem level at the intersection of population health and health disparities. He is grateful to have fantastic collaborators and colleagues, including with the VA Primary Care Innovations Lab, the UW Internal Medicine Residency Program, and with SGIM’s Health Policy Committee.
